How to Care for Leather Goods: Cleaning, Conditioning, and Storage

Learn how to clean, condition, and store leather bags, wallets, and accessories. Expert leather care tips to keep your pieces beautiful for years.

Understanding Your Leather

Leather is a natural material — and like all natural materials, it responds to its environment. It absorbs moisture, dries out in arid conditions, and develops a unique patina over time. Understanding this is the foundation of good leather care.

Most quality leather goods use full-grain or top-grain leather. Full-grain retains the complete surface of the hide, including natural markings. Top-grain is lightly sanded for a more uniform appearance. Both are durable and age beautifully with proper care.

Daily Habits That Protect Your Leather

  • Keep it dry — leather and water are not friends. If your bag or wallet gets wet, blot (never rub) with a soft cloth and let it air dry away from direct heat
  • Avoid direct sunlight — prolonged sun exposure fades colour and dries the leather
  • Clean hands — oils, ink, and hand cream transfer easily to light-coloured leather
  • Rotate your pieces — if you use a leather bag daily, give it occasional rest days to maintain its shape

How to Clean Leather

Light Cleaning (Weekly)

Wipe the surface gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth. This removes dust and surface grime before it works into the grain. Follow with a dry cloth and allow to air dry completely.

Deeper Cleaning (Monthly or as Needed)

Use a cleaner specifically formulated for leather — never household cleaning products, vinegar, or alcohol-based solutions. Apply a small amount to a soft cloth, work gently in circular motions, and wipe away residue with a clean damp cloth.

Always test first: Apply any cleaning product to a hidden area and wait 24 hours before treating the visible surface.

Conditioning: The Key to Longevity

Conditioning is to leather what moisturiser is to skin. It replaces natural oils that evaporate over time, keeping the leather supple, preventing cracks, and deepening the colour.

How often to condition:

  • Every 3–6 months for items in regular use
  • Before and after storage periods
  • Whenever the leather feels dry or stiff to the touch

How to condition:

  1. Clean the leather first (conditioning over dirt traps it in the pores)
  2. Apply a thin layer of leather conditioner with a soft cloth
  3. Work it in with gentle circular motions
  4. Let it absorb for 15–30 minutes
  5. Buff away any excess with a clean, dry cloth

Storing Leather Properly

  • Stuff bags — fill them with acid-free tissue paper to maintain shape
  • Use dust bags — store leather goods in breathable fabric bags, never plastic
  • Stand bags upright — do not stack or compress them
  • Cool and dry — store in a climate-controlled space away from heat sources and humidity
  • Give them space — leather needs air circulation to prevent mould

Handling Stains and Scratches

Water Stains

Dampen the entire surface evenly with a lightly moist cloth, then allow it to dry uniformly. This prevents the water mark from standing out against the surrounding leather.

Light Scratches

Gently rub the scratch with your finger — the warmth and natural oils from your skin can often blend minor scratches back into the surface. For deeper scratches, a small amount of leather conditioner works wonders.

Ink and Dye Transfer

Act quickly. Blot with a dry cloth, then consult a professional leather cleaner. Home remedies often make ink stains worse.

The Beauty of Patina

Well-cared-for leather develops a patina — a subtle lustre and colour deepening that only comes with time and use. This is not damage; it is the leather becoming uniquely yours. Every mark, every subtle shade change tells the story of how you live with the piece.

The goal of leather care is not to keep leather looking new forever. It is to ensure it ages gracefully — growing more beautiful with every year.
